A homage to Steve Jobs
The world is in shock.  Grieving.  The moment I heard the news, my heart sank.  My eyes began to well.  I heard gasps around the Google office. I knew the news that I had just seen hit my chat box from a colleague was true.  Steve Jobs has finally surrendered to his long time rare illness, pancreatic cancer.
Just as any person [in denial] would do in today’s digital age, I launched Google.com and began to search for some legitimate evidence that perhaps, it was merely an insensitive prank someone was playing.  I hoped.  It didn’t take more than a few seconds for Google News to put that hope to rest. Almost immediately, I launched my Google+ stream and there it was, post after post of words that all shared the same somber tone.  Inspirational quotes, videos and photos of Steve dominated my stream. And I realized one thing.  Steve’s death is somehow bringing us all together.
The technology space is cut-throat and competitive.  Everyone is fighting for users.  It’s a known fact that competition makes everyone work harder.  But today, everyone came together as one.  On a day like this, we learn to put down our swords and simply remember that when all is said and done, we share one thing in common that’s for certain — we love technology.  So it is no surprise that the whole world stopped on their tracks, paid respect and expressed their utmost adoration for Steve, who made an undeniable and incomparable impact in the technology space and society, as a whole.  Steve’s legacy will live on.  He created a brand so strong and powerful that today, it signifies his company, more than the fruit itself.
I am so proud to see Steve’s name humbly grace the Google homepage this evening. Tonight, it’s not about who has the best mobile platform, has the most users or is most popular. No, not tonight - tonight, it’s all about respect and admiration. It shows that at the core, we share one common ground: we all carry a passion for technology.  One of my favorite quotes from Marissa Mayer, VP of Google, is that “passion is gender-neutralizing force.”  Evident by the outpouring of love, remembrance and appreciation we are seeing all over the internet today for Steve Jobs, I agree.  Passion is a neutralizing force, period.
