NO REALLY, YOU CAN
While I can’t exactly claim that I am on any kind of feminist movement, I’d be lying if I said that I didn’t enjoy my sense of independence — the notion that I don’t [always] need a man to get things done. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule and there a few tasks that are only fit for the men in our lives — for instance, the plumbing that needs to be done around the house or taking out the garbage . ;)
For the most part though, we (as in women) can pretty much do most of everything that any man can do — yes, even the stuff that requires heavy lifting. But you see, society has women programmed to believe that we can’t function without a man. This is why if we aren’t with one, we are constantly on the look out for one. This past weekend, I finally got myself a Christmas tree. My initial inclination was to call my dad or one of my guy friends to help me. I didn’t.
It got under my skin to think that I couldn’t do it on my own (though as it turns out, you really can’t — the task does require two people.) But it also doesn’t mean you need to go running towards a man to get it done. Reaching a happy medium, I instead called another girlfriend, who just so happen to also be on a mission to turn her own sanctuary into a festive, Christmas holiday-themed getaway. Though she suggested that she had already made arrangements for her friend, Jeff, to carry the tree up to her place, I insisted that we do it on our own. She made the point that there are certain things that are not worth doing just to simply make a point.
I disagreed.
I wasn’t just trying to make a point for the sake of making a pointless point. I wanted to learn that when I don’t think I can, I actually can. And as dumb and trivial as it sounds I wanted to learn how to master the art of buying a tree and somehow getting it up through the stairs to the second floor, into my apartment and putting it all together so that it is standing up on its own — tall and proud.
.
The trees ended up to be only 30 lbs. each and it literally took 15 min. to get them out of the car, into our respective apartments, and hammered into their stands. But how else would we have known that had we not simply tried?
And not only was it a rewarding experience, now I get to thoroughly enjoy this lovely view from my dining table. Makes work after work more bearable.
